The appeal to the participants from Dmitry Shmelkin, Huawei

Hello dear participants of the IMO!

My name is Dmitry Shmelkin, I am a mathematician by education and occupation, including in our Huawei mathematical modeling laboratory. I want to tell you that in the 21st century, mathematics as a science and as a specific culture is even more important for other sciences and especially for technology than in the 20th century.

You are probably familiar with the successes of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. But this is just one of the big shifts in mathematical research in modern technology. The success of mathematics is ensured by the fact that mathematicians – great and ordinary – day after day try to comprehend engineering, to propose some kind of fruitful formulation of the problem. It is precisely this – defining and setting tasks – that is the mission of a mathematician.

But in order to set fruitful tasks, one must first solve the tasks set by someone well. This is what you are all going to do now, and I wish you all victory. But even if you do not win, this experience will still give you a lot, and of course we also highly appreciate it. So I am waiting for each of you as a colleague, so that together with me and my comrades, I am waiting for a great and interesting work. Thank you.
